Americans have been suffering through a healthcare crisis for many years. Lack of providers, the deficiency to access, and skyrocketing price tags plague the healthcare system. While Obamacare exacerbated the problem, it has been an issue for generations. It is time for real solutions and for state leaders engaged in finding answers.
Healthcare is a three-pronged issue. We must address all three prongs to find workable solutions which improve the system. The three-prongs are access to care, insurance, and cost of care. only addressing one part of this issue creates further concerns and chaos in the other areas. So, any real solution must look at all three aspects.
When Obamacare rolled out, it’s primary focus was insurance. It sought to take care of the under or uninsured. Because this was the only real aspect addressed, it created larger issues in other areas. It created an increased demand for access. This demand drove up costs by creating a greater demand without additional supply. It also removed the insurance industry’s ability to manage their risks and costs. This created a significant increase in premiums. If unchecked this will create a collapse of our insurance industry. Which will lead to increased chaos in our healthcare system.
The 2018 Idaho Legislative Session had a solution presented to begin addressing these concerns. It proposed a mode of operation which brought insurance costs down. We had been working on this proposal for over a year. Stakeholders from the medical/insurance industries, the executive branch of our state’s government, and many others participated. This was an instance of a group of varied individuals working together for the good of the people. They worked hard to find a solution everyone could support.
Unfortunately, misinformation and fear were spread about the proposed solution. Because of this, the proposal died in the House without an alternative proposal.
Idahoans deserve better. They deserve answers and relief. We cannot, in good conscience, continue to kick this can down the road.
It’s past time for leaders to come to the table with a sincere desire to find improvements and real answers. It will require lawmakers to do the job they were elected to do and find solutions to problems Idahoan’s face.
